Maybole Over 50s Backgammon group

As part of the Maybole Over 50s community group, the Backgammon group meets every Tuesday morning from 10.30am until approx 12.00pm. Our venue is St. Oswalds Church Hall, at the junction of Cargill Road and Gardenrose Path.

All players are welcome to this group, though after two 'free' sessions you will need to join Maybole Over 50s to come to further meetings. We charge a small fee £1 per session to help cover the cost of the venue, heating, lighting and free teas and coffees.

The group is lead by Jules Smith, who started playing Backgammon about 40 years ago. Jules is on hand to teach complete beginners to the point where they can play the game without assistance. We have small competitions between our members, sometimes they are knockout tournaments, sometimes we run a league table, and occasionally we try something slightly different (such as Nackgammon, a variation on the standard game).

In August 2019, 2 players from this group joined a 5-strong Ayrshire team to compete at a UK-wide tournament for backgammon clubs in York. Though the team didn't progress past the first round we won our second match and only closely lost our last match, well exceeding our expectations.

If you wish to find out more, please contact Jules on 07784 896611, or via the Contact Us page.

Ayr U3A Backgammon group

In October 2017 we received a visit from the UK Backgammon team captain Martin Barkwill.

Ayr U3A is the Ayrshire branch of the world-wide U3A organisation. Since 2017, and in addition to the Maybole group, Jules has been running a Tuesday afternoon group in Ayr for the U3A.

The group meets from 2.30pm until approximately 4.30pm in the Community Room at the Tesco's Supermarket in Whitletts Road. Newcomers are welcome to attend 2 free taster sessions before you are required to join the Ayr U3A.
